Spicy Onion Chutney (for Dosa and Iddli)

Yummy Onion Chutney

Although this sweet-sour-spicy chutney calls for a little more oil than you would like to use, and takes a few minutes to prepare, it is worth it all to the yumminess YOU DESERVE 😀

Ingredients

  • 1-2 cups finley chopped onion or shallots (I use Red onion and chop using a mini food processor)
  • 1 finely chopped tomato
  • 1-2 tspn. paprika or mild chili powder
  • 1 tspn. hot chili powder (optional)
  • 1 tspn. sugar
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 tspn. lemon juice
  • 5-6 tblspn. Oil (coconut oil gives the best flavor but you can use other varieties)
  • 1 sprig curry leaves

Method

  1. Heat a non-stick pan
  2. Heat oil and add curry leaves. Stir for a minute
  3. Add onion and saute until well browned.
  4. Add tomatoes, sugar, salt and lemon juice
  5. Continue cooking for another 8-10 minutes on medium flame until the whole mixture turns deep brown indicating that the onion is well caramelized
  6. This chutney can be refrigerated for up to a week.
